For those of you not familiar with the term, Bluetooth refers to a wireless protocol (or set of rules) designed for short range electronic applications (usually less than 30 feet in distance). Although the technology has been around for several years, Bluetooth support for PC users has been limited due to hardware manufacturers focusing on the more traditional 802.11 wireless network protocols (wifi). In reality, Bluetooth and wifi achieve different purposes and each has its pros and cons.

Cellular Telephone Bluetooth Headsets

The cellular telephone community has long embraced Bluetooth technology, developing and refining numerous wireless devices. One of the more popular Bluetooth applications for cellular telephones has been cordless headsets which enable users to leave their telephone in their bag or pocket while still being able to make and receive calls. Bluetooth headsets are generally very lightweight, worn over one ear and achieve talk times from 1-4 hours before needing a recharge.

Bluetooth PC Headset?

So if cellular telephone users have warmly embraced Bluetooth headsets, why not the PC community? At the time of writing, this author knows of no PC hardware manufacturer who has designed a Bluetooth Headset primarily for use with a PC. However, there is nothing to prevent a PC user from using a cellular phone Bluetooth Headset with their PC. Keep in mind though, these headsets were originally envisioned for cellular phone use and may need a bit of 'tweaking' before they'll perform as well as 'corded' headsets on your computer.

USB Bluetooth Adapter

Unless you own a relatively expensive notebook PC, odds are that your computer doesn't natively support the Bluetooth protocol. If this is the case, you'll need an 'Adapter' or 'Dongle' in order to make your computer 'Bluetooth enabled'. Bluetooth adapters are generally very small (a few inches long) and insert into a vacant USB port on your computer. When purchasing an adapter it's critical that you buy one that supports the 'headset protocol'. The headset protocol is merely a set of rules which enables your Bluetooth adapter to communicate with and make use of Bluetooth headsets in its vicinity. If your adapter does not support the headset protocol, no amount of 'tweaking' will get your headset working with your PC. Adapters generally run between - USD and can be purchased at most PC retailers.

Buying a Bluetooth Headset

Bluetooth headsets for cellular phones are generally very expensive when compared with conventional 'corded' PC headsets. Depending on where you buy your headset, you could spend anywhere from to 0+ USD. If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive headset that'll simply enable you to make wireless VoIP calls using your PC, I recommend looking on Ebay. Although prices vary considerably on Ebay between merchants for similar products, overall they are considerably less expensive than purchasing the same headset from a telephone store. A word of caution about Ebay though; ensure that you read the fine print associated with shipping costs. Some Ebay merchants advertise Bluetooth Headsets for USD however the real cost quickly rises to + when you account for their often exorbitant shipping charges.

'Pairing' the Headset with your PC

Once your computer is 'Bluetooth enabled' and you've obtained a Bluetooth headset, you'll need to 'pair' the headset with your computer in order to use it for VoIP applications. This is usually just a matter of setting your headset in 'discovery mode' and allowing your PC to 'search' or 'discover' Bluetooth devices. The steps needed to enable discovery mode on your headset and adapter will vary between devices and should be clearly explained in the documentation accompanying your devices.

Adjusting your Audio Settings

Depending on your hardware and operating system, you may need to make adjustments to your audio settings after the headset is 'paired' with your PC. In the Windows operating system, this will involve accessing 'Audio Properties' through the 'Control Panel' and setting the audio and voice devices to your newly paired Bluetooth headset. Again, adjusting these settings should be covered in the documentation accompanying both your headset and Bluetooth adapter.

Once you're up and running, you'll wonder why you didn't adopt this wireless headset solution sooner. The freedom to wander away from your computer whilst maintaining voice over Internet conversations is something you'll come to appreciate and love.

Airplane turbulence has a bad reputation for those with flying anxiety.

The reason that airplane turbulence takes the blame is because it touches your senses in a very real way. You FEEL the plane moving around differently. You SEE the coffee cup shaking. You HEAR the pilot tell you to fasten your seat belt.

What causes the turbulence and how much of a safety problem is it?

As a child, did you ever lay back on a lazy day a watch the clouds drift by? I spent countless hours imaging different shapes in the clouds. In fact, I still look up at the clouds and see a face or an animal.

It's a different story when we fly through the clouds. Those creamy white clouds don't seem to like getting run over by an airplane.

The bumpiness that we feel in an airplane when flying through clouds is just the movement of the air. It's an updraft of going from warm air to cool air and it creates a bouncy ride.

You might wonder why you feel turbulence and you don't even notice any clouds.

Instead of clouds, you may see mountains. There is something called 'mountain waves' which also creates turbulence. Within all the nooks and valleys of a mountain range are variations of temperatures. Thinking back to science class you'll remember that warm air rises. All these variations of temperatures are moving and circulating which creates turbulence.

Does airplane turbulence create a air safety problem?

You may not like mild turbulence. If you have a fear of flying, it may cause you to grip your armrest until your knuckles are white. Your heart may beat faster or your stomach may knot up in discomfort. But it does not cause any kind of air safety issue.

The chance of a flight safety problem is very slight. Pilots are well trained to handle the situation because we practice and rehearse this very situation twice a year in a simulator. Hands on experience with turbulence tells us it's time to make some changes not only for flight safety but also for the comfort of our passengers.

When I hit turbulence, I simply check in with the air traffic controllers and ask if other pilots have reported smoother altitudes. Then I'll slow down and go to the altitude where I'm likely to find less bumps.

So, what can you do when turbulence strikes? Stay in your seat with your seat belt fastened. We'll be moving to a smoother air space as fast as we can.

The pilots don't want a bumpy ride either.

Most mobile DJs will need some form of lighting to illuminate the guests and the dance floor. This guide is intended to help beginner mobile DJs design their first lighting rig by considering some of the less obvious issues that become apparent only after working with a mobile lighting rig for some time. Tempting as it may be, the best option is not to jump straight in to buying the latest and greatest lighting effects. By taking a step back and planning the overall package, you will be able to design an impressive, practical setup that serves you well for a variety of functions and won't break your back or your bank balance.

There's no right or wrong way, and the relative importance of each of these issues will vary depending on the type of functions at which you perform, your preferences, and even your transport. You might choose to ignore some of them altogether, but it's important to give them some thought before you start assembling your equipment.

Practical Considerations

Mobile DJs perform in all sorts of different venues, with wildly varying dimensions and facilities. One day you might be in a hotel ball room with all the space and power you need, and the next in a marquee with a low ceiling, uneven floor, and restricted power supply. Most of a DJ's equipment is adaptable enough to fit into most spaces without too much trouble. Speakers, whether they're on stands or not (and in most cases they should be), can be positioned independently of each other so they don't need a space of rigidly fixed dimensions. However the lighting rig can often be the largest item to be set up and might need a significant amount of power, and can therefore be the most difficult to accommodate in a variety of venues.

The layout of your lighting rig needs to take into account various practical considerations:
Size when packed -- will it easily fit into your vehicle? Size when set up -- will it easily fit into most venues, or be adaptable enough that you can quickly modify it if necessary e.g. by using a shorter length of truss or just one T-bar? Weight -- some lighting fixtures are heavy. Can you carry all of the components without hurting yourself? Are your lighting stands strong enough to support them all safely? Carrying in/out -- how many trips will it take to carry all of your equipment into/out of a venue? Speed to set up -- you'll often find you don't have much time to set up, and nobody wants to wait around for hours while you pack down at the end. How long will it take to assemble/disassemble? Power -- how much power will be required to run all of your lighting combined? Finding more power sockets takes time and power supplies are sometimes limited (e.g. in a marquee running from a generator). Modern, LED-based lighting effects use very little power and can be a great help here.Stands

Lighting effects work best when raised up high so that the beams shine down from above and are in a good position to cover a wide area. While others do exist, the types of lighting stand that are most practical for a mobile DJ are:
T-bar -- a horizontal bar mounted on a tripod. Truss -- a horizontal metal structure mounted on two vertical stands, consisting either of tripods or more truss sections.Both can be very effective. Trussing can look very impressive but is generally more bulky to transport, takes longer to set up, and is less adaptable. T-bars are easier to transport/setup, and can be positioned independently to allow greater flexibility when setting up. Depending on your transport arrangements both types can sometimes be pre-rigged with cables and even lighting effects, saving time and effort when setting up and packing away, although in the case of trussing this can make it even more bulky and difficult to set up in a tight space.

Lighting Effects

Not only will your lighting rig need to be adaptable enough to physically fit into a variety of venues, it also needs to be adaptable in terms of the effects it produces. Including a variety of effects will mean you have something appropriate to all events and types of music, and also helps to keep the show interesting by varying the effects throughout the party.

The main types of effect to consider including, in order of importance, are:
Colour wash -- PAR cans, LED bars, etc. to throw coloured light over a wide area. Room-filling effects -- twisters, gobo flowers, etc. Scanners/moving heads -- scan beams and patterns around the room / dance floor. Special effects -- lasers, strobes, etc.A haze or fog/smoke machine helps to highlight the light show by making the beams visible in mid-air, but beware of using them in venues with fire alarms. The consequences of triggering a venue's fire alarm system could include an evacuated venue, a ruined party, and a visit from the local fire service!

Controlling the Lights

Having a variety of effects is no use without a way of controlling and switching between them. This can be as simple as a power switch panel (19" rack-mount versions are available), or for better control use a DMX controller. With a suitable DMX controller and DMX compatible lights, it is possible to control your effects such that they synchronise and complement each other. Although it is more complicated and requires more effort and equipment, this is the best way to create a truly professional looking show.

Use gentle, slow-moving effects for slow music, and more energetic effects for faster music. Everything gets boring after a while, so vary the effects throughout the event and use special effects sparingly at appropriate moments.

Presentation

The look of your system is important. Although most people won't recognise specific makes/models of lighting fixtures, they will notice if your setup is untidy or unprofessional. Try to aim for fairly consistent looking fixtures. Stick to a colour scheme if possible -- most lighting effects, clamps, and stands are black and silver. Use all black cables and keep them tidy by taping or strapping them to your lighting stands. Try to set up the effects so that they are evenly distributed and symmetrical on your stand(s).

Although they might not be visible during a performance, the look of any boxes or cases is also important. A neat row of professional flight cases gives a far more professional appearance to guests and venue staff than a pile of tatty cardboard boxes.

Cost

There's a vast array of lighting effects available, ranging from very affordable to extremely expensive. Be realistic about what you need and what you can afford. Set a budget and try to stick to it. Buy the best you can afford within your budget -- you'll regret buying cheap equipment if you're quickly forced to upgrade to something better. However, don't worry about getting the best of everything -- a well designed setup of consistent quality is what's most important.
